Post Carbon Senior Fellow Richard Heinberg was interviewed for Iowa Public Radio ahead of his visit there to give a keynote speech at the Iowa Enviromental Council Annual Conference.

Ben Kieffer - So what would a post carbon food system look like? I'm trying to imagine our food produced without the fossil fuels.

Richard Heinberg - Well it's going to require a lot more farmers because of course what we've done with fossil fuels is replace people with machines. It's also going to require that we develop, or redevelop, varieties of crops that require fewer inputs for fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, and so on that are better adapted to local conditions. In some ways we are talking about a form of agriculture more similar to what was crafted several decades ago, but we can still benefit from many of the scientific advances that have taken place in the meantime...
