"When I first started giving these talks five years ago, I would suggest we had what I would call a lot of the normal consumers of fringe topics," Martenson said during a telephone interview from his home. "Now it is becoming more mainstream."

Two days before coming to Sonora, Martenson is scheduled to speak at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. Five days after Sonora he'll be in New York to speak to the United Nations subgroup concerned with economic sustainability.

"In February, I am going to be before the House of Commons in the UK," Martenson said. "All of this would have been unthinkable two or three years ago."

The receptivity of the mainstream to his analysis changed, Martenson said, because of the collapse of the housing bubble and the instability of the banking system.

"We've got an economy that has to grow to be happy. When it shrinks, it is really unhappy," Martenson said. "People are waking up to this all over the world."
