Post Carbon Fellow David Fridley was quoted in this article on grassroots efforts going on in Monterey to transition from oil dependency and build resilience.

As part of the Transition Initiative — a global movement to support communities transitioning from oil dependency to self-sufficiency — local groups under the umbrella of Citizens for Sustainable Monterey County are working at a grassroots level to spread awareness about imminent energy challenges, as well as working toward solutions to improve our quality of life in both the short and long term...

"We've been consuming three barrels for every barrel we've discovered for the past 30 years," Fridley said.

A Department of Defense report called the 2010 Joint Operating Environment predicts that by 2012, surplus oil production capacity could entirely disappear.

"While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce ... at best, it would lead to periods of harsh economic adjustment."
