Post Carbon Fellow Michael Shuman was the featured speaker at the Western Rainier Economic Development Initiative, WREDI, 2010 Summit Conference, an Eatonville-based effort to assist local businesses.

Shuman, author of "Going Local" and "Small-Mart," spoke of the coming rural renaissance, and how to develop businesses that are locally owned and focused on local needs.

Shuman delivered perhaps the most innovative idea of the conference by suggesting the possibility of WREDI forming a stock exchange that could raise capital to develop new businesses and expand existing ones.

In addition, Shuman offered numerous ideas on how small local businesses could expand with modest investments such as neighborhood coffee shops roasting their own blends and expanding menus, or establishing their own bakeries that could furnish pastries, breads and other goods to a broad retail market.
