Reduce Consumption : Produce Locally

ASPO Ireland News

Submitted by Colin Campbell on June 9, 2006 - 2:06am.
May was a busy month for ASPO-IRELAND. Steps were taken to open a bank account for the contributions that begin to come in to sustain this non-profit organisation. And a new website was organised for the newsletter and other purposes (www.aspo-ireland.org). A particular effort was directed at organising a conference in Cork on May 31st which attracted some 75 participants including key representatives from the business community, politicians and the media. Ireland does indeed seem to be waking up to the challenges of the new energy situation, taking the issue of peak oil and its dependency on imported gas very seriously. Interest in the Peak Oil issue explodes around the world giving rise to a great deal of correspondence and much media attention. Interviews were granted to two Australian TV crews, as well as two further independent producers from France and the United States. A broadcast for Radio Australia was also transmitted. ASPO IRELAND is acting as a secretariat for the international federation which grows rapidly with already as many as twenty counties represented. Routine work continues compiling, and refining the data as well as modelling depletion under alternative scenarios.
Colin - while its good to see that Ireland is waking up to Peak, I am wondering if the Irish Government is taking heed. Particularly with elections looming next year, is there any party taking it seriously enough to make an impression before those elections? Since whoever gets into power will be the ones who can make a difference on this island.
