Living In Transition: Navigating the End of the Fossil Fuel Era

Fellows: Richard Heinberg
Location:Kalamazoo College, MI
Dates:Sep 20, 2010 – Sep 20, 2010

The last century was a unique historic period of rapid growth fueled by cheap fossil fuels. Transport and food systems came to depend on oil, while coal and gas generated our electricity and heated our homes. The 21st century will be dominated by the twin realities of fossil fuel depletion and climate change adaptation. Personal success and cultural survival both depend on how we manage the shift from coal, oil, and gas to other energy sources and smaller energy budgets. In the process, we will re-invent agriculture and redesign our way of life.
