Groups such as Portland Peak Oil, www.portlandpeakoil.org, meets every single Wednesday night to discuss preparation on a city wide basis. We have speakers, general discussion and movies. Some of our more popular topics have been food storage, possible economic consequences, study groups for books such as When Technology Fails, Earth User's Guide to Permaculture and The Transition Handbook.
We have been meeting nearly every week since June, 2005 and the attendance at meetings is between 20 and 150. We have 500+ people on our announcements list.
