Reduce Consumption : Produce Locally

James Howard Kunstler's Special Appeal Summer '07

James Howard Kunstler

Dear Friend,

My name is James Howard Kunstler. I'm a Fellow with Post Carbon Institute and also a donor. I urge you to donate to Post Carbon's 2007 fund drive, and take advantage of a special offer from an anonymous supporter to match your donation. Let me tell you why I support Post Carbon Institute, and why I'm asking you to donate now.

Contrary to a lot of wishful thinking and techgnostic wool-gathering rampant these days, no combination of alternative fuels or systems for using them will allow us to run America the way we currently run it, or even a substantial fraction of it. We are not going to run Wal-Mart, Walt Disney World, and the interstate highway system on hydrogen, coal synfuels, tar sand or oil shale distillates, bio-diesel, ethanol, recycled french-fry oil, solar electricity, wind power, or nuclear fission. The stark truth of the situation is that we are simply going to have to make other arrangements – and I'm sorry to have to repeat that this will be the case whether we like it or not. Suburbia will be coming off the menu.

What will be on your menu when America emerges from the cul de sac of suburbia? Your donation ensures Post Carbon's creation of alternative arrangements. If you're like me, you know how important independent media is. At this time, roughly 90% of the media market in the United States is controlled by 6 media conglomerates. I highly recommend Post Carbon's Global Public Media as an alternative to the puerile pocket meal sound bites foisted on us by the mainstream media.

Post Carbon's Global Public Media is a vital contribution to a democratic and independent media, and offers diverse long format audio and video programming on peak oil, energy depletion, climate change and Relocalization topics. When you support Post Carbon, you take an active role supporting alternative programming. So far in 2007, Global Public Media has provided you with over 60 programs including the following highlights:

• My presentation at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club March 19th

• A reading by author Barbara Kingsolver on eating locally

• A sustainable enterprise address by Post Carbon Institute President Julian Darley

• Interviews with economist Tom Greco; ecological philosopher Derrick Jensen; sustainable living author Greg Pahl; visionary peak oil theorist Richard Heinberg; and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory staff scientist David Fridley

Post Carbon Institute challenges the assumption that the suburban project or urban landscape of inverted coal shaft skyscrapers can continue indefinitely. We are entering a permanent global energy crisis that will put an end to the two-car garage utopia whether people like it or not. If you believe in creating communities that honor the public realm and a world beyond the incessant presence of the automobile, I urge you to make a donation to Post Carbon Institute.

An anonymous Post Carbon supporter has generously offered to match every donation during Post Carbon's Summer Fund Drive. If you donate between June 28 - July 19, your contribution will be doubled! I want you to give whatever you can afford. Your donation of $25, $50, $100, $500, or more will ensure Post Carbon Institute continues generating powerful information on peak oil and climate change and on relocalization.

Sincerely,

James Howard Kunstler
