Reduce Consumption : Produce Locally

Laying the groundwork for dialog

Submitted by Mike.Murphy on April 24, 2006 - 9:26am.

My hope and desire is to help stimulate an on-going discussion/periodic gathering re creating islands of sustainable community. I see consumer capitalism collapsing in on itself, destroying itself in wars and garbage. Thus I see the need for sensible people to find a different road, like that sketched in Trainer's "Thoughts on the Transition to a Sustainable Society."

I've been giving this Peak Oil thing close attention since early December, and while my books are momentarily scattered and so I can't quote relevant experts, I can say that the published evidence indicates that:

1) The major oil companies have been avoiding telling the truth in order to keep stock values in their companies high;

2) The gov'ts are in denial because they are the puppets of the oil corporations and don't want to make waves;

3) The major oil-producing countries all re-estimated their reserves in a cosmetic and syncronized uplift in recent years, with the graphs looking like a choreographed face-lifts and tummy-tucks, all lifting at once;

4) ASPO (the Associaiton for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas) is a group of independent top professionals who realized the gov'ts and corporations were in denial and avoidance, and so they independently began having international meetings to study and publish the best information and estimates available; they do not work for anyone else; they are about as close as we will get to reliable information that is shared with humanity (not the bottom line) and sustainability in mind.

     I would take more time here, but am in the midst of preparing for a presentation plus panel discussion titled "Peak Oil & Beyond:  Creating A
Sustainable Society While Entering the Post-Carbon World," which will be presented at the SOS Mockbee Gallery, Sunday, April 30, starting at 3pm and running til 4:30.  Then there will be a film showing of "The End Of Suburbia."  Plenty of food for thought and discussion.  Surely we need both.

For more information on our artshow event, the schedule of events is posted at http://home.earthlink.net/~cighe/PeakOil/MockbeeSchedule.htm
