Reduce Consumption : Produce Locally

San Francisco Post Carbon (CA)

Raising Awareness in San Francisco
San Francisco Post Carbon is a group of concerned citizens raising awareness on issues related to peak oil: energy and resource depletion, overpopulation, continuous economic growth.

Monthly Meetings
San Francisco Post Carbon meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00p. Our present meeting location is downtown at 50 California Street. Meetings cover a wide range of topics related to peak oil, such as cohousing, agriculture, viability of alternative energies, etc. Join the Bay Area mailing list for meeting details. Our regional Bay Area peak oil groups hold monthly meetings at other times and locations.

Oil Age Poster
A working group from San Francisco has created and published a peak oil poster, for sale online at oilposter.org. Proceeds benefit free distribution of the poster to schools, and also help support Post Carbon. Over 1,600 posters have been donated to educators free of charge. In addition, every member of congress has received a poster thanks to the assistance of Representative Roscoe Bartlett.

Community Outreach
We participate in local events such as Solfest, the Green Festival, peak oil movie screenings, speaking events, etc. We also attend regional, national, and international meetings on peak oil, relocalization, and sustainability.

San Francisco Projects
The SF Bay Area Post Carbon groups are working together on projects that support our mission.

  • Our "Oil Age" poster has been tremendously successful in communicating the significance and urgency of our peaking in oil production. Thanks to Colin Campbell for the oil production statistics.
  • One member created a college-level course on the subject of peak oil, which he taught at Oberlin during the Spring 2006 semester. Post Carbon members helped refine the syllabus during working sessions, offering feedback and ideas on the course content and readings.
  • Friends in another SF peak oil group have successfully lobbied the SF board of supervisors to listen up about peak oil.
  • Together we are planning other peak oil projects, such as a San Francisco conference, a peak oil film series, a media response team, an art show, a local course on peak oil, and more.
  • Post Carbon Institute is undertaking a Bay Area relocalization effort.

Help Strengthen Local Networks
Other communities in Northern California are actively working together to prepare locally for peak oil. How can you and your organization participate? Join other progressive groups and activists in the Bay Area.

  • Craig's List is working to pull people together through their Bay Area Progressive Directory.
  • The community of Willits is way ahead of other Bay Area communities in preparing for peak oil.
  • Folks in Sebastopol are also starting to take action, led by a former mayor, Larry Robinson.
  • The city of Oakland has a 100-year plan, including local gardens for food production.
  • SF Department of the Environment is investigating a plan to harness tidal forces under the Golden Gate bridge.

We can all learn from one another, cooperate in pursuing our common goals, and together make our lifestyles here in the SF Bay Area more sustainable.
