Perl quoted at Vancouver 24 Hours on cars

Post Carbon Fellow Anthony Perl was quoted on the need for Vancouver to adopt policies which reduce car journeys.

Simon Fraser University urban studies professor Anthony Perl believes the only solution that can drive Vancouver towards sustainable forms of transportation is to continue eroding the personal vehicle’s presence on our roads.

But unlike some international cities that have started planning for sustainable transport decades ago, Vancouver is late to the game, he said. That means changes need to occur faster – and large changes are almost always tied to great resistance.

“The epiphany was you can take 3% of the space away from the cars everywhere (each year), parking spaces and that, and no one would complain,” Perl said.
