Story

I started rebelling against our auto-addicted culture in 1998 before I became aware of peak oil. The Roanoke Times (in Virginia) did a story about me in April of 2006.  Since 2006 I've begun cycling to work some of the time and have purchased a bicycle-power electrical generator for emergencies. Also, I've taken up vegetable gardening and ceased mowing my lawn. Most of my 1.25 acre lot is now either forested or garden space. I cut the grass with a sickle or scythe and use it for garden mulch.
My wife & I have also installed a ground-source heat pump for heating and AC. That (along with other conservation measures) has reduced our home electrical consumption by 300 kilowatt hours; down to and average of 600 per month.
