Bay Localize: Building an Inclusive Movement for Local Resilience
Bay Localize is now a force to be reckoned with at City Hall, at regional agencies, and even within the corporate boardrooms. We’re truly building a people’s movement for resilient, post-carbon communities that meet everyone’s needs. Most recently, our Local Clean Energy Alliance in partnership with the Oakland Climate Action Coalition won a major victory by getting the Oakland City Council to vote UNANIMOUSLY in favor of groundbreaking greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets that are among the boldest in the nation!
Now, we must ensure that Oakland adopts climate action policies that create good-paying green-collar jobs for residents who need them most, slash pollution in the city's most impacted neighborhoods, and reduce our dependency on depleting fossil fuels. Toward that end, our Local Clean Energy Campaign is championing two signature policies: (1.) a labor and community-driven energy purchasing program to jumpstart renewable energy development locally, and (2.) a comprehensive energy efficiency and solar financing program to save residents money and make home retrofits and PV systems more broadly affordable. In addition, we've just launched a Green Faith in Action program that's helping low-income parishioners in Richmond and higher-income congregants in Marin implement measures to make their homes more energy efficient.
As an organization committed to social justice, Bay Localize is deeply concerned that global warming, peak oil, and economic instability are already impacting low-income people and communities of color first and worst. To help build a truly inclusive and equitable movement for regional self-reliance, we have begun convening leaders from across racial justice and localization/Transition Initiative groups to share strategies that will prepare our communities for the deepening challenges ahead. This summer, we’re partnering with Movement Generation and People Organized to Win Employment Rights on a rooftop garden for community members in San Francisco’s Mission District and are collaborating on a major public workshop entitled “Resilience for All: Building an Inclusive Movement for Local Self-Reliance” at this year’s Green Festival.
Lastly, on September 16, Bay Localize will launch our long-awaited Community Resilience Toolkit. As a core component of our Bay Area 2020 program, the Toolkit is a facilitation guide designed to lead groups to think holistically about how to build ecological, economic, and social resilience in their communities while decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. The Toolkit offers Bay Area-specific fact sheets, resources, and actions in six key sectors: food, water, energy, transportation, jobs, and civic services.
