Last November I attended the USGBC’s ‘Greenbuild’ conference in Boston. I came away from the conference with two words stuck in my mind: urgency and resiliency.

Scott Horst of the USGBC gave a presentation stressing the need for urgent action in order to prevent catastrophic consequences of climate change. You can see his slide in my blog.

The final course I attended was a panel discussion during which Dayna Baumeister of the Biomimicry Guild spoke passionately (to the point of tears) about the potential loss of species due to climate change. Her personal response to this was to teach her children how to be resilient. I was left wondering, how do I teach my own son to be resilient?

After a lot of thinking, I decided to set some goals. My first goal was to build a chicken coop. We now have four hens which usually give us four eggs a day. We give away about a dozen eggs a week to neighbors who sometimes offer us produce from their gardens or vegetable scraps for the chickens in return. In the process, my son has learned a little about carpentry, animal husbandry, and the economics of raising chickens vs. buying eggs. I hope this has planted a memory in his childhood that may come in handy one day should food become expensive or even scarce. I also hope this builds his confidence: that he can take steps to provide for himself, his family and neighbors.
